Absorption pattern
The session featured several waves of supply through the morning that got absorbed without breaking the prior day's low — and each successive wave found a higher floor. That's an absorption read, not a distribution one. Distribution looks like supply landing and the bid stepping back; absorption looks like supply landing and the bid stepping in. The two patterns are easy to confuse from outside the tape, but the close near session highs and the steady advancer count through the afternoon argued for the constructive interpretation today.
Risk-on without crowding
Cyclicals led modestly, equal-weight outpaced cap-weighted by a small margin, and the high-beta complex finished ahead of the defensive complex without anything looking euphoric. The credit-sensitive read firmed alongside small caps. Importantly, the option market didn't price in any drama — implied vol drifted lower and at-money skew flattened. That's the constructive cocktail: appetite without crowding, leadership without froth, and a vol market content to discount the next session rather than reach for hedges.
Building, not breaking
Today didn't resolve any of the bigger questions on the chart — the compression range is still the compression range, and the headline level still has work to do before the bullish thesis confirms itself. But the texture of how the index got here is the kind that builds support rather than spends it. When buyers absorb steadily through the day and the close lands near the top of the range with breadth and credit corroborating, that's a meaningful brick in the foundation of whatever comes next. Worth respecting on its own terms.
